So, I successfully moved and am trying to settle into my new little niche in the world. Starting a doctorate program is an exciting and daunting process. I feel like a schoolboy, eyes all glossed over with wondering exhilaration. I have many thoughts and ideas. I see trends emerging, feel questions arising. I was speaking to a fellow doctoral student from Scandenavia, and she put me to the point very quickly: "how do you do it? You have a bunch of questions, sound very humanistic, but how do you boil it down to something small? If you go to a conference like this, they're going to say that maybe you need to be on medicine or something." Touche. I was talking ethical nonsense again. Asking about what kind of parameters to put on technology before it is everlastingly too late. How do we make use of invaluable media, techno-advances, and increased positive medical outcomes without sacrificing ourselves at an alter that is increasingly not human. It is a bright time to be alive right now--to be sure. But, as my sardonic uncle always says, "it's always brightest before it's pitch black." I hope we wake up to the extrapolations, the ... of it all, before it is irreversible. I hope to stay healthy enough to play my part in the unfolding drama.
